Forming a Ballets Russes Playlist with Free Associations

The garments in our collection are the essential resources for the modern-day audience to get a glimpse into the radical, avant-garde Ballet Russes productions during the 1910s to 1920s. Though, what do these objects mean to them? How do people understand these remnants of those fleeting moments in today’s context? Following such thoughts, our curatorial team invites you to share with us your initial feelings about the featured objects and any piece of music that comes to your mind. You are also welcomed to give us a brief description of the reason behind your choice. We aim to form an individual playlist for each of the objects with the results we received from your participation. The original compositions (if found) from the Ballets Russes productions will also be featured at the end of the collective playlists. You may then compare with the ones shared by other participants to find out what different responses may be evoked by the same object to different viewers.

These are some questions that might help guide you:

  • Would it strip away their significance if the garments that were once an integral part of the stage performances were taken out of the original context? Can they be viewed as complete objects then? If yes, what problem/possibility  may that lead to through this decontextualization?

  • What was different in your perception towards the garments comparing your experiences before and after visiting the exhibition? And what remained the same?

If there is a new idea that came up after comparing your thoughts with those from the other visitors, or with the original Ballets Russes compositions, feel free to leave your comments.

Come back any time to check them out or when you have new thoughts after viewing the rest of this online exhibition. We look forward to listening to the music that was prompted by your imagination!
